Do's and Don'ts for the Netherlands

 

Do’s

  • Get registered in the Embassy after coming to the Netherlands.

  • Respect the Dutch laws, customs and traditions.

  • Do pay attention and follow national and local advisories issued by the Dutch authorities.

  • The Dutch institutions work on appointment-based system. Do follow the appointments.

  • Plan meeting well in advance and be on time; the Dutch are ruled by their agenda which is planned well before and they are very conscious about punctuality.

  • The Dutch value their physical and personal privacy, respect their personal space.

  • Must have health insurance and registration with a family doctor.

Don’ts

  • Do not indulge in any illegal activity.

  • If it is not possible to meet on appointment, inform well in time at least 24 hours before. (In certain cases, such as medical appointment, there are mandatory fines which cannot be condoned.)

  • Avoid displaying intolerance towards any ethnic group or alternative lifestyles. 

  • Many Dutch frown upon those who display a sense of superiority. Always show respect to the service providers. 

  • For many, the monarchy is considered to be the heart of their country. Do not criticize the Dutch royal family.
